
Prof. Igarashi's research stemmed from interests in cell differentiation during his training at a medical school. Prof. Igarashi took graduate trainings at Tohoku University (Prof. Hiroshi Okamoto) and National Institute of Genetics, Japan (Prof. Akira Ishihama), and postdoctoral training at the University of Chicago, USA (Prof. Bernard Roizman). After serving as Assistant Professor at Tohoku University (with Prof. Norio Hayashi), Lecturer at Tsukuba university (with Prof. Masayuki Yamamoto), Associate Professor at Tohoku University (with Prof. Norio Hayashi), and Professor at Hiroshima University School of Medicine, he moved back to Tohoku University in 2005 and has been leading the Department of Biochemistry.
Member of Japan Biochemical Society, Molecular Biology Society of Japan, Japanese Cancer Association, and American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Editorial board member of Journal of Biological Chemistry.
Gene regulatory network of B cells, single cell analysis
I am focusing on to reveal the roles of transcription factor Bach2 which is required for class switch recombination in activated B cells (Muto 2010 EMBO J). Not only does Bach2 inhibit plasma cell differentiation by repressing Blimp-1 expression (Tanaka 2016 J Biol Chem), but it also regulates survival and proliferation of B cells (Miura 2018 J Immumol).
Gene regulatory network and chromatin of B cells
my goal of research are: 1) to discover the new function of B cells for body homeostasis mechanism; 2) to develop the clinical application using the mechanism.

I am interested to find out biomarkers that are useful for cancer diagnosis. Now, my research focuses on the effects of BACH1 in cancer cells and therapeutic strategy based on its effects.
Epitranscriptome, mass spectrometry
I am focusing on the feedback regulation of the expression of MAT2A, the mammalian S-adenosylmethionine synthetase, through intracellular SAM-responding methylation of its mRNA, and also am interested in the reason why SAM production must be regulated so strictly in living cells.

My research focuses on the regulation of ferroptosis by BACH1 and the influence of BACH1 and ferroptosis on cancer and biological function.

My research focuses on understanding the role of chromatin plasticity in lineage restriction using the plasma cell differentiation model.
